Board Effectiveness Survey

With the increasing call for improved corporate governance and board accountability, it's always crucial to carry out a comprehensive board survey to enhance your board's effectiveness. Boards can enhance their leadership and commitment to good corporate governance and accountability to stakeholders by conducting an independent review of their effectiveness.

It's important, however, that a review of a board's effectiveness isn't seen purely as a compliance or box ticking exercise, but rather one that can contribute to improving board performance.

The Board Effectiveness Survey has been designed to review the effectiveness of the board as a whole and not as a review of individual directors (for individual director review, refer to Director 360 Feedback Survey). The Board Effectiveness Survey is a comprehensive survey that benchmarks the effectiveness of boards against comparable organisations whether they are public, private, government or not-for-profit organisations.

Limitations of self-administered surveys

Many boards that conduct surveys use their own, internal self-administered surveys to assess their effectiveness. Some limitations of this approach may include:

  • They are rarely comprehensive in the issues they address
  • The survey items are often untested and inappropriately worded
  • Survey process can be prone to bias and often lacks statistical rigour
  • They do not encourage candour, as respondent anonymity isn't protected
  • Without benchmarking or appropriate gap analysis, the results are often incorrectly interpreted


Our Board Effectiveness Survey can be completed separately or in conjunction with a process that includes directors and management interviews, reviews of charters, agendas, board or committee papers, minutes and the like.
